Edward "Ned" Hector

Edward "Ned" Hector was born about 1744, and died in 1834 at age 90.  He was a teamster (wagon driver) and artilleryman.  He fought at the Battle of Brandywine at the age of 33.  He was noted for his courage during the retreat from Brandywine, when he refused to let his team, wagon, and dropped armaments fall into enemy hands.

He was quoted as saying, "The enemy shall not have my team.  I will save the horses or perish myself."

He lived in a cabin in Conshohocken and was buried there.  Hector Street in Conshohocken was named after him.  His daughter-in-law, Leah Hector, live to be 107 years old and died in 1887.  He received a token payment of 40 dollars from the Continental Congress the year before he died.

Noah Lewis' knife - nothing goes to waste

Nothing went to waste in Revolutionary War America.  Here is Noah Lewis' knife as an example.  The blade is made from an old file, ground down and given a sharp edge.  The handle is made of a cow's leg bone.  An excellent example of making the tools you need with the items you had on hand.
