Renovation Projects - Upgrade to Monster Fly Table
|
Originally tossed together with scrap wood just to see if a table under the fly would provide a little extra storage space, it has become an indispensable component of the fly and the center of social activity at every event the Monster Fly is in attendance. It serves as a reposity for cups, plates and all sorts of whatnot during the day, and is transformed into the main serving area for the mess during mealtime. As membership has grown, the small table has not and is now woefully inadequate to meet the unit's needs. After soliciting input from the unit membership (particularly the beautiful Ladies of the Regiment), the table is getting a major facelift. All the requested changes were incorporated into the new design. Starting with the original table, additional boards were added to increase the width (beveled to reduce injury to little heads), and new legs were designed that allowed for the use of hinges to facilitate setup and takedown by a single person. Shelves were also added beneath the table top to provide additional storage space. One side has a single shelf with lots of headroom for large baskets and other items. The other side has two shelves, an upper one for cups, plates, bowls, and other personal items. Beneath that is another shelf that provides for more storage. The main purpose is to get things off the ground where recent events have shown a definite need for keeping things up and away from moisure and, well, MUD. The main construction was completed over the Memorial Day weekend. The entire table top was sanded new and smooth, and an initial stain on the first section and one of the shelves has been completed. The remaining sections will be stained to match and receive a satin finish of polyurathain to make it food safe. The legs will be painted a flat black, and the bottom few inches will also be poly'd to make them waterproof. |
